A
commercial or 'full-service bank' offers a broad range of financial services
to both individuals and businesses.
Historically, commercial banks concentrated on commercial or business lending
and on investing in securities. Recently commercial banks have
extended their offerings due to competitive forces, industry consolidation,
new regulations and new technology.
In 2003 the
US had 7,769 commercial banks.
The majority of assets held by commercial banks are loans. Commercial
banks are the largest financial intermediaries directly involved in the financing
of real estate.
Commercial banks are extensively involved in off-balance-sheet activities including the issue of guarantees and derivative transactions. These off-balance sheet activities earn banks fee income to complement declining margins or spreads on traditional lending activities. Under current accounting standards, off-balance-sheet activities are not shown on the balance sheet but are maintained as off-balance-sheet asset or liabilities.
Derivative instruments enable a bank to hedge against liquidity, credit and insolvency risk without making extensive changes on the balance sheet. In 2001 on-balance-sheet activities of commercial banks were $6.569 trillion and off-balance-sheet activities represented $51.409 trillion.
The Commercial Banking model set is a set of Enterprise, Business Area, Data Mart and Data Warehouse logical data models that address the comprehensive data and reporting requirements of commercial banks.
